Prof. Offiong Emerges UNICAL 12TH VC

The Governing Council of the University of Calabar has approved the appointment of a former commissioner of Education in Cross River State, Prof. Offiong Effanga Offiong as the 12th Vice Chancellor (VC) of the institution.

Speaking at the 172nd Governing Council meeting of the University of Calabar, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the 14th Governing Council of the institution, DIG Udom Ekpoudom Udom (rtd) said the appointment which will last for five years takes effect from Dec 1, 2025.

In a release on Friday from the Public Relations Unit of the University, the Pro-Chancellor described the process as peaceful despite initial hiccups emanating from external elements he described as enemies of the University

He expressed gratitude to the almighty God who stood by him throughout the exercise, and in the same vein commended the President of the Nation, Sen. Bola Tinubu for assembling such a crop of Nigerians in the Governing Council, describing them as wonderful.

The Chairman of Council specially lauded the Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Otu for his understanding and his massive contributions, especially in the area of security, towards making the exercise a peaceful one.

DIG Udom showered praises on members of the University for their maturity while the exercise lasted, describing them as a community with a good heart.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor designate, Prof. Offiong E. Offiong commended the Pro-chancellor and members of Council for finding him worthy to serve, even as he lauded the level of maturity displayed throughout the process.

Prof. Offiong pledged loyalty to the Council, declaring his determination to work with them in order to move the University forward.

He lauded the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi and assured her of his continued partnership and consultation on the Unical project.

The highpoint of the event was the formal presentation of appointment letter to the new and 12th Vice Chancellor designate.
