Since assumption of office on May 29, 2023, one very remarkable attribute of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has been his deliberate and visionary commitment to the ARISE Agenda.
The five-pronged development blueprint has received commendable attention with manifest strides in youth empowerment, sports development, infrastructure, tourism promotion, and talent discovery.
Like the Big Bang theory of creation, which pictures a sudden explosive expansion ballooning the universe outward faster than the speed of light, the Governor’s passionate drive for sports development has seen facilities, programmes, and initiatives multiply at a breathtaking pace.
A case in point is the proposed establishment of the Ibom Sports Academy in Eket, an institution designed to discover, nurture, and propel young talents into national and global sporting stars.
Complementing this is the unprecedented procurement of world-class sporting equipment, the first in 14 years, giving athletes the tools to train, compete, and excel at international events.
The passion exuded by the Governor, from deploying resources to preparing our youths to compete and conquer the world in various sporting activities, is indeed commendable
In his remarks at the festival, Governor Eno said, “We are here to discover talents who would eventually fly the flag of our dear State and bring us laurels. Sports is no longer a pastime; it is a platform for youth empowerment, economic growth, and international recognition.”
Also, the creation of a stand-alone Ministry of Sports, underscores the administration’s commitment to institutionalizing sports development. With the expertise of the Commissioner, the Ministry is already interpreting the Governor’s vision efficiently and strategically.
Governor Eno knows that, sports is a multi-billion dollar global industry, and he believes that among our youths are the next, Troost Ekong, Mary Onyeali, Bukayo Saka, and Coco Gauff waiting to be discovered.
Furthermore, Governor Umo Eno has also developed sporting facilities including a 9-hole golf course, outdoor and indoor games at the audacious tourism location, the ARISE Resort in Uyo which is billed to open in December of this year.
These developments will position Akwa Ibom as a premier destination for sports tourism in Nigeria and West Africa.
The sports festival logo unveiled during the event beautifully encapsulates the Governor’s vision of unity, agility, strength, cultural pride, and identity that are all captured in the design.
This reminds the competitors that sports is not merely a game, but a reflection of heritage, teamwork, and collective ambition.
The Sports Festival, which spans 18 categories across multiple venues, provides the stage for these talents to shine, build friendships, and embody sportsmanship.
As rightly noted by Oscar de la Renta, “Things never happen by accident. They happen because you have a vision, you have a commitment, you have a dream.”
Governor Umo Eno’s vision, commitment, and dream, as enshrined in the ARISE Agenda, are gradually transforming Akwa Ibom State into a hub for sporting excellence, a destination for tourism, and oppourtunity for its youth.
With the Games officially declared open, Akwa Ibom is no longer a bystander in the sporting world; it is a contender, a destination, and a testament to what intentional governance can achieve.
