The Cross River State Government in collaboration with Nigeria Drug law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) have called on youths in the state to keep away from things that would alter their academic excellence for a better future
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Orientation, Comrade Afufu Anthony Ogar-Ogabor made the call during an orientation summit against drug abuse among secondary schools that was organized by the State Government at Government Secondary School, Barracks road in Calabar yesterday
Ogar stated that the orientation summit has become necessary at this time in point, that is why the government has started the state wide orientation summit in public secondary schools to educate students on the need to stay away from social vices like drugs abuse, carrier confusion and peer group pressure.
“We are embarking on state wide orientation summit to educate students on the need to abstain from anything that will distract them from attaining academic excellence”, he stated.
Ogar said the orientation will cover all the three Senatorial District in the state maintaining that they first started with higher institutions in the state and now they are in secondary schools, starting from cross river south.
He said the administration of Governor Bassey Otu is investigating in the youths of the state as the future leaders of tomorrow, “that is why we are collaborating with the NDLEA to educate the secondary schools students on the dangers of drug abuse that can destroy their future if something is not done immediately, which is the reason for this orientation summit” he stated
The representative of the Nigeria Drug law Enforcement Agency, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics 1, Mr Eyo Effing Okon from the Department of Drug Demand Reduction, speaking on the topic; “From Distraction To Distinction” emphasized on the effects of Drug Abuse maintaining that drug abuse has eaten deep into the fabrics of the society
He maintained that the young ones are the most vulnerable, that is why it is necessary that the campaign is taken to the schools so as to properly educate the students on the effects of Drug Abuse and the dangers associated with it.
He advised the students against keeping friend who would influence them negatively, focus on their education so that their future would be better
