Six New Cocoa Farm Estates Underway In Cross River

    By Anietie Akpan

The Cross River State Government has initiated plans to establish six  new Cocoa farm estates in six Local Government Areas of the State.

The plan was made public during a critical stakeholders engagement meeting held in Calabar, under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Development.

This was contained in a press release on Thursday from the office of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill.

Speaking at the forum, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Hon. Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo Jnr, disclosed the ongoing process of engaging stakeholders to acquire land for the establishment of cocoa estates in Akamkpa, Akpabuyo, Bekwara, Odukpani, Obubra, and Ikom Local Government Areas.

Ebokpo stressed the importance of stakeholders involvement to ensure the success of this initiative,  outlining criteria such as number of hectares, land suitability (soil analysis ) which has been in the works for quite some time, as well as community engagements which is at the forefront of Governor Otu’s people first agenda.

He said that the project will adopt a complete public-private partnership model, where the government in collaboration with the communities facilitate the development of the new estates.

The Commissioner  emphasized that forthwith, cocoa development would be in compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) which includes traceability of the cocoa source, ensuring that child Labour or forced labour is not used while also ensuring that farms are not established in government gazetted forest reserves.

“This is to ensure that  areas degraded are restored through sustainable agro-forestry programmes by  inter-cropping such areas with shade trees to balance the ecosystem and preserve biodiversity, hence the ministry’s collaboration with the State Forestry Commission”, Ebokpo explained.

He further noted that as part of the programme, Cocoa farms and  allottees, would be digitally enumerated immediately a farm is identified and deemed suitable  for ease of access to traceability information which will ensure that living income premiums are paid to deserving farmers.

Similarly, Mrs. Juliet Ntui, representing the TRACE project, commended the initiative for rural poverty alleviation and pledged their support.

Breakout sessions were held for each LGA to determine land allocation, followed by presentations of their decisions with Agriculture Stakeholders who are committed to maintaining ongoing communications with their communities and providing feedback to the Ministry of and Irrigation Development for follow-up actions.

  • 25 Years Of Unbroken Democracy, The Devil And The Saint

25 Years Of Unbroken Democracy, The Devil And The Saint

By Anietie Akpan and Ita Williams, Calabar

Cross River residents have declared that one year of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has erased whatever gains Nigeria achieved in her 25 years of democracy.

In their divergent views, they said there is no democracy in Nigeria as the entire system, institutions and individuals throwing up democracy and governance in the country are fraudulent and dirty. This Federal Government has rolled back Nigeria sucking the masses into a state of topsy-turvy and despondency.

However, the populace in the state have taken solace in the one year performance of Governor Bassey Otu saying he has given Cross Riverians hope and great expectations of what democracy should be by thinking of the people first through his lofty programmes and projects.

A popular lawyer in the state, Barr Ozinko Ozinko raised concerns about President Tinubu’s national policies, specifically attributing them to the exacerbation of the hunger crisis in the country.

He said, “the President’s policies have not done enough to address the pressing issues faced by the people”, enumerating the need for “more effective strategies to tackle the challenges impacting citizens nationwide”.

Jacobson Okpa, a final year secondary school student expressed deep concerns about the leadership of President Tinubu, saying, “it’s a disaster and a colossal failure.”

Okpa opined, “in just 365 days of our 25 years of democracy, President Tinubu has led Nigeria to a state of failure. The country has become a poverty-stricken nation, plagued by hunger, starvation, and insecurity…Nigeria is on the verge of becoming a banana republic if urgent action is not taken”.

He however poured encomiums on Governor Otu’s efforts in Cross River State, expressing confidence that with continuous support, the entire state will be transformed.

“Governor Otu has been working tirelessly to fix every facet of the state’s economy,” Okpa said adding, “if given the chance to serve for even up to eight years, I believe the entire state will be unrecognizable because of his good governance, programmes and projects delivery. We should give him the opportunity to fulfil his vision for Cross River given his transformative initiatives in his first year in office that have brought positive changes to the state that was adrift eight years ago.

Pastor Dominion Esang: Lauded the Governor of Cross River State for his dedication to enhancing the state’s infrastructure and services.

“The Governor’s focus on fixing existing systems has led to noticeable improvements in Calabar,” Pastor Esang acknowledged, identifying the tangible benefits of the initiatives undertaken by the state leadership as he also expressed hope for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, calling for support and prayers from Nigerians to facilitate positive change in the country.

Other Cross River State residents shared their perspectives on governance and progress at both the state and national levels.

On his part, Obi Ozoh, a University student, criticized President Tinubu for the sudden removal of the oil subsidy without proper planning, warning that “Nigerians may turn against him if issues are not addressed by 2027”. However, he lauded the visible improvements in the state and expressed hope for continued progress.

Suny Agu a trader, stated, “while local developments are evident, the national policies need a revaluation to address the current crises affecting ordinary citizens. In fact Nigeria needs help, we should pray hard; prayers to the God Almighty can avert Nigeria from the doom that is coming ahead of us. Now we have become a poverty stricken nation under President Tinubu. This is not democracy”.

“For Otu and Cross River, this is democracy”, Agu said adding, “I want to say that the governor of Cross River State Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu’s one year in office has paid off. He has light up the city, today there are no more potholes on our roads, the traffic lights have returned from eight years exile. Traffic Wardens can now heave a sigh of relief and some people are saying Otu is magician, but I see the People’s Mandate as a silent performer, let’s give him support for he has perform credibly well, in fact I score him 99.9 percent for now”.

Another resident, Efiom Ette, a businessman, appreciated the progress in the state but stressed the need for national decisions that align with the needs of the people for sustainable growth.

He criticized the current economic policy, particularly the removal of subsidy from crude oil, as leading the country to failure.

“in our President’s inaugural speech, immediately he said, ‘Fuel subsidy is gone’ everything in the markets went skyrocketing, he said adding, “but our governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the ‘People First Mantra’ is trying, he is doing his best at least we can see Calabar is gradually becoming a mega city of our time”

Anita Effiong, an undergraduate student, applauded the governor’s focus on state-level projects, but stressed the need for introducing a more comprehensive national strategy for holistic development across the country.

“While the governor’s attention to state-level initiatives is commendable, we need to see a more cohesive, nationwide approach to development.

“The challenges we face, from poverty to infrastructural deficits, require coordinated action at all levels of government. I urge the executive and legislative branches to work together to avert further failure in addressing the needs of the Nigerian people”, Effiong said.

Florence Uko, a petty trader, acknowledged the impacts of governance in Cross River at the grassroots level, but expressed deep concerns about the prevailing issues of hunger, poverty, and the lack of effective price control policies.

“Since the inception of the Tinubu administration, we have seen prices of goods and services skyrocket, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians to make ends meet,” Uko said.

“I call on the government at all levels to introduce policies that will empower local businesses and enhance livelihoods. Our leaders must reflect on how to move Nigeria away from the brink of collapse, because the country is gradually becoming a failed state”, she said.

In this 25 years of democracy, Ene Ikang, another student, called for the governor to focus on youth development, stating that investing in the nation’s young people is crucial for the country’s future and the people.

“Developing the youth means developing the nation. We need to ensure that young people are actively involved in shaping the future and that our leaders implement impactful governance at all levels. Their perspectives and aspirations must be central in the decision-making process.”

An undergraduate, Obi Ofem praised Governor Otu’s leadership qualities and humility, which he believes are driving progress in the state.

“Governor Otu’s approach is one that should be emulated by other leaders,” Ofem said noting that “his commitment to humble, effective governance is evident in the developments we’ve seen in the state. However, we must also maintain investment in youth development to ensure a brighter future for all Nigerians.”

Vincent Omini: A level-3 student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, applauded the governor’s efforts in revitalizing Calabar and called for the adoption of inclusive policies to foster national unity.

“Governor Otu has shown a genuine commitment to improving the state’s infrastructure and overall livability,” Omini said adding, “but we must also address the need to bridge divides and promote collaboration for sustainable development. Nigeria’s future is at stake, and we cannot afford to let political and social divisions undermine our progress”.

A welder, Mr. Daniel Mbe stressed the essence of economic stability and the need for a focused approach to job creation and industry growth to uplift communities.

Economic stability is the foundation upon which our communities can thrive. The government must not sleep on the current state of the nation. Every facet of our economy seems to be collapsing at the national level. We need to prioritize job creation and industry growth to uplift our communities and urban areas. Only then can we truly tell our future generations a different story, one of a prosperous and resilient Nigeria”, Mbe said.

In all, they submitted that as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day, these diverse voices in the state have underlined the pressing need for responsive, inclusive, and effective governance at all levels to address the multifaceted challenges facing the country.

Cross River Commences Mining of Solid Minerals Soon

    Governor Bassey Otu

    By Anietie Akpan

Faced with lean resources,  Cross River state government will soon commence the mining of her vast solid mineral resources.

The State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu in a press release by his Chief Press Secretary,  Nsa Gill, said this when he visited the Minister for Solid Minerals Development, Mr Dele Alake in his office in Abuja recently.

He revealed that Cross-River state is on the verge of joining other states in operating a mining company, having applied for a license as a limited liability company.

Governor Otu emphasized the State’s commitment to leveraging its vast mineral resources for state development stressing the importance of partnering with the ministry to combat illegal mining activities.

He said, “we needed to come and look at the laws and regulations guiding proper mining processes. This will help us make informed decisions in collaboration with the federal government to clean up the mining sector. We are also exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to tap into our vast solid mineral potential”.

With this visit, the Federal Government and Cross-River State are enhancing their collaboration to sanitise the mining sector and address the issue of illegal mining operations in the state.

Speaking while receiving  Governor Otu in his office, the Minister highlighted that the visit exemplifies the renewed spirit of cooperation between the federal government and states in harnessing the nation’s mineral resources towards fostering economic development.

“The governor’s visit is a clear example of the collaboration we are aiming for between the federal government and subnational authorities. Our goal is to sanitise the mining sector, secure mining areas, and create a conducive environment for investors,” Alake said.

Findings by Pillar Today showed that during the former Governor Ben Ayade’s administration, the state government had signed an MOU with Shian Xi and Hun Ching Provinces of China and as a result of the bilateral understanding, the Chinese from Shian Xi came for the exploration.

It was gathered that over 34 minerals were identified to be available in different parts of the state and some of the solid minerals found in commercial quantity in the state are uranium, iron ore, manganese, tourmaline, barites, marbles, galena and sphalerite, coal, kaolin, sulphite, rutile as well as new limestone deposits and others.

The then Commissioner for Solid Minerals in the State, Mr. George Oben’enchi had said “between eight to 10 new minerals were discovered in addition to the old ones. In a community called Ishibori in Ogoja, we discovered very precious and high content of illumenite in commercial quantity. In Iso-bendeghe in Boki local government area stretching into Bendeghe-Afi in Ikom council, we discovered massive magnetic iron ore.

“That is something that we never knew, even the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) never knew we have that in Cross River state. This is what steel companies have been looking for. It is like a torch light in a day time.   I am very sure that what we have seen so far can last for the next 100 years or more”.

  • The New Face Of Calabar: A Transformation Story

The New Face Of Calabar: A Transformation Story

    OPINION

    By Nsa Gill

Welcome to Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State in the South-South geo-political zone and crude oil and gas-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Known for its rich history and cultural heritage, a reputation that faced the challenge of neglect and near abandonment in the recent past.

The current administration, under the leadership of Senator Bassey Edet Otu as Governor, within one year in office, has remedied the situation, and the city is regaining its long-cherished and enviable reputation.

    There are remarkable transformations.

In the last year, the current administration fixed and rehabilitated many intra and inter-city roads. Commitment to urban renewal has been evident.

Government has taken up the rehabilitation, remodeling and redesigning of infrastructure.

The city’s roundabouts have received attention. The popular eleven-eleven roundabout now has a new stature. It is the Holy Bible. Artistically displayed with hand depicting the Bible opened to the particular verse that tells the reader, that God watches over the city. The design is modernised and allows the Bible to rotate geographically, according to wind movement and sunsets.

Calabar-Calabar runabout is also receiving a facelift. Work is still ongoing.

The remodelling of the zone six roundabout divided interests, but the government went ahead, and replaced the monolith sculpture that was there, for about twenty years, with a sculpture of a good shepherd and the sheep, equally designed in modern technology that sees the shepherd turns at intervals to watch his sheep that cluster round him. The government has not made official statement about the divided interests that greeted the change in the design option, but it is obvious that the government prefers the monoliths in the natural habitat scattered around the central senatorial districts of the state.

The Cross River State Tourism Bureau is still empowered to promote same, as one of the state tourism attractions, which the state is richly endowed.

Other public infrastructure like the governor’s office and government lodges, as well as offices, are also wearing a new look or work is ongoing.

The public water supplies have also been brought back, and the public taps are flowing, once again.

The present administration also inherited a situation where Calabar was struggling with issues of cleanliness and security concerns, but concerted efforts are being made by the state government and residents to revitalize and rejuvenate the beloved city.

Commissioner for Information in the state, Erasmus Ekpang, stated that the current administration recognised the need to address the challenges facing Calabar, and embarked on a comprehensive plan to transform the city.

He said: “Our focus Is on improving cleanliness, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing security, in order to create a more livable and sustainable urban environment.”

Ekpang also noted that one of the most noticeable changes in Calabar is its newfound cleanliness.

He said: “The city’s streets are now free of litter and debris? Thanks to regular cleaning and waste management efforts. Beautification projects have also been implemented. Green spaces and public art installations that enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal are there for all to see.”

The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Gyogon Grimah, said “residents of the state, who have been here for some years, can testify of the level of improvement in security since the inception of the present administration.”

The police commissioner also hailed Governor Otu for the attention and support he has given to the security commands of the state.

He stated: “If we are sincere to ourselves, we should boldly say that we have a better Cross River State today.”

Grimah equally assured investors already in the state and intending ones, as well as all residents of Cross River state, that the entire security agencies in the state were collaboratively working round the clock to ensure that its pride of place as ‘the people’s paradise’ and most peaceful sub-national in the country remained intact.

A religious leader, Bishop Emmah Isong, who is the General Overseer of Christian Central Chapel International, while articulating his views on the new Cross River state, told journalists that the glowing reviews from the citizens and residents of the state were eloquent testimonies of the huge impact the present administration had made in barely a year in the reins of government.

Bishop Isong, who is also the National Spokesperson of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), noted that it was only logical to begin the ongoing infrastructural revolution in Calabar, the seat of government, then, as it presently is, cascade to other parts of the state.

On security, the eminent cleric maintained that the indices in the state had greatly improved, while declaring that it would be hypocrisy to say there were no minor issues of crime here and there, but added that attempts to discredit the government’s remarkable improvement in the security of lives and property, agriculture, infrastructure and other spheres were exaggerated conjectures.

The State Security Adviser, South, Patrick Odiong, outlined a grassroots’ strategy to combat crime, highlighting the importance of community involvement.

A traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Itam Hogan, the Paramount Ruler of the Efuts, also offered his assessment of the current administration in one year.

The foremost monarch said: “I will want to take my assessment beyond infrastructure. The government has impacted on the people. The streetlights offer residents in some suburbs opportunity to stay outdoors at evening hours to enjoy natural fresh breeze.

“The people are optimistic about what the future holds. They believe if the government continues at the same pace, better and prosperous economy and society is guaranteed.”

Calabar is often referred to as the Canaan City, and sometimes, the Paradise City, but today, some may want to call it, the City of the Good Shepherd.

Gill is the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Cross River State.

  • Efut Leaders Tackle Itam, Posit Munene Lacks Powers to Withdraw Certificates, Dissolve ECA

Efut Leaders Tackle Itam, Posit Munene Lacks Powers to Withdraw Certificates, Dissolve ECA

    By Magnus Effiong

Clan heads and other leaders of the Efut Combined Assembly (ECA), whose certificates were reportedly withdrawn by the Munene of the Efuts, Prof Itam Hogan Itam, have described the said withdrawal of their certificates as jokes taken too far.

Their position was contained in a press statement signed by the Secretary-General of the Efut Combined Assembly, Ndabu Dr Godwin Bassey and five others.

In the statement made available to PillarToday, the leaders questioned the authority of the Professor to take back certificates which he did not give in the first instance, and that the Efut Munene does not have powers to dissolve the registered Efut Combined Assembly which they described as the apex decision making body of the Efut people.

Recall that the Munene was said to have, last week, at the Palace of the Efut Combined Assembly, Anantigha, Calabar South, dissolved the Assembly and withdrawn the certificates issued by the Cross River state government to the said leaders- a move which stirred tension across the length and breadth of the Council area.

“Prof Itam Hogan Itam has no authority to take what he never gave, therefore the so-called withdrawal of certificates is a mirage,” the statement stated in part.

On the dissolution of the Efut Combined Assembly, the Leaders submitted: “Efut Combined Assembly is the highest ruling body of the Efuts. (Refer to the Constitution of the Muri Munene Council of 1974.)

“Besides, Suit No C/183/95 states that ‘it is the prerogative of the Efut Combined Assembly to select a new Munene of the Efuts. We did not select Prof Itam as our Munene.

“Court Order in Suit No HC/102/2020, restrained Prof Itam H Itam and others from interfering with the affairs of Efut Combined Assembly, and barred him from doing anything inconsistence with the rights of the Claimants.

“This Court Order has not been set aside till date, as such, Prof Itam H Itam has no authority to pronounce suspension on any member of the Efut Combined Assembly.

“Suspension of the members of the Efut Combined Assembly by Prof Itam H Itam is illegal. Court Judgement in Suit No: HC/155/2021 had dismissed the Muri Muneneship of Prof Itam. The said Court Judgement has not been set aside.”

On the alleged forceful takeover of the Efut Combined Assembly palace at Anantigha, the press statement said “Prof Itam Hogan Itam filed a lawsuit in Court against the Efut Combined Assembly in Suit No: HC/161/2023 praying the Court to remove the Efut Combined Assembly from the palace at Anantigha. The matter is still pending in Court.

“But on Thursday, June 4, 2024, Prof Itam and cohorts invaded the Palace, destroyed the Assembly signpost and took over the Palace by force thereby committing contempt of court.”

The leaders called on Governor Bassey Otu to critically look into the almost 16 years old succession tussle  explaining that “the Reconciliatory Committee set up by the State Governor has never one day invited the Efut Combined Assembly for peace talk.”

Çross River state government has ordered the immediate disbandment of the suspended Cocoa Allocation Taskforce and Surveillance Team in the state.

This order by the State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu as contained in a statement dated June 10 by his Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, affects the four government-owned Cocoa Estates in Etung LGA set up by the Cocoa Allocation Committee, including any other group operating under any guise.

  • Who Needs Free Football Tickets?

    OPINION

    By Etim Etim

Akwa Ibom State government has the largest social welfare programmes in almost every sector in the country, but adding free football tickets could be counterproductive.

The government provides free education for all primary and secondary school students with free books, and this has been going on since 1999. It pays about N700 million yearly as WAEC fees to its students and, in addition, there’s a scholarship and bursary scheme for university and polytechnic students. Gov. Umo Eno has increased the bursary to N100,000 per student from what his predecessors offered.

He is also extending generous financial help to all students with disabilities, including those who are not from the state as recently published lists of beneficiaries indicate. In terms of medical care, is free health care to pregnant women and children under five years of age. Women who have multiple births are also generously provided for. The government also routinely sponsors people on pilgrimage to Israel. It is common to see some persons with the suffix ‘’JP’’ attached to their names. It stands for ‘’Jerusalem Pilgrim’’.

The current governor has gone a step further to provide free food stuffs to thousands of the very poor across the state. A new body known as Akwa Ibom Bulk Purchase Agency has been set up by law to drive the program whose aim is to offer succor to vulnerable citizens facing hard times. The Umo Eno administration has also introduced a free housing scheme to widows and the poor. Known as Arise Shelter Initiative, the scheme plans to deliver 100 homes for the poorest of the poor in the 31 LGAs. The gesture was first introduced by Mrs Unoma Akpabio as a pet programme of her NGO when her husband was governor, but the incumbent governor has upgraded it into a government programme.

It all started when Gov. Eno watched a video of a young girl celebrating completion of her NYSC with her aged father at home in Obubra, in neighbouring Cross River. Reports say the governor was so moved by the wretchedness of what passed as her family home that he ordered a brand new three-bedroom house to be built for her father.

Civil servants are not left out. Some 150 of them are getting free housing units out of the 236 apartments being built at Grace Housing Estate in the outskirts of Uyo.

Of all these, I detest pilgrimage sponsorship and offering free football tickets whenever the Super Eagles play at the state-owned Godswill Akpabio Stadium. It happened last Friday when the national team played against South Africa in a 2026 World Cup Qualifying game. The three categories of tickets cost N1,000; N2,000 and N3,000. These are quite affordable to the people, but the government chose to pay over N40 million to the NFF to buy off the tickets and fill up the 30,000 seats in the iconic stadium. This is an ill-advised policy that was started by the Akpabio administration. Gov. Udom Emmanuel continued with it and now it would seem that it has become an agenda of the government. Over N600 million might have been spent on free tickets since the stadium was built ten years ago. We have to scrub the practice because the disadvantages are many.

In the first instance, watching football games (or any other games) at the stadium is a luxury pastime. It is not a necessity that the poor has to have to survive. It is therefore wrong for the government to fund a hobby or lifestyle for a people who can afford it. Second, the tickets are quite affordable and football fans in the state and neighbouring states can afford them. Third, by asking Akwa Ibom people to go watch the games free, the government is unwittingly shutting out those who are able and willing to pay for the tickets, including hundreds of fans who would have come from Calabar, Benin, Aba, Port Harcourt and other places with enough money to buy the tickets and spend on hotels accommodation. Think of the economic benefits lost. By hosting the UEFA Championship league final last week at Wimbledon, the London economy is said to have gained $68 million.

Putting people on football welfare encourages indolence and is antithesis to basic economics and business principles. I understand the assumptions behind this practice. Football is the people’s favourite hobby, and whenever the national team is in an international competition, it deserves our support at the stadium. The government probably believes that the people are too poor to afford N1,000 ticket; and that it owes us a duty to provide the opium that football matches have become in these difficult times. That’s not true. Truth is the games are organized by FIFA and it is the duty of the NFF to market and sell the tickets. Akwa Ibom government has done enough by providing the stadium free to the NFF who should actually be paying handsomely for its use. The stadium was built at a great cost and is maintained expensively by international facility managers. That is why it is still as beautiful as it was when it was completed in 2014. This is not your typical federal government assets that are rotting away all over the country because of quota-driven incompetence. Akwa Ibom has done well for itself in just 15 years. We have an iconic stadium; we have a splendid airline; we have our own airport, with a first-class international terminal and an MRO soon to be put to use. We must benefit from these assets.

Football is a huge global business. It was wrong to have started this football welfare. Now, it may be difficult to wean the people off it, but we must do it. I implore the government to engage a reputable marketing communication firm to drive corporate advertisements for the stadium, and discontinue to the practice of giving out free football tickets. Interested fans can buy for themselves.

Annulment Of June 12 Presidential Election Fuelled Nigeria’s Democratic Struggle, Otu

The Deputy Governor, Rt Hon. Peter Odey(left), the Speaker, CRHA, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem at the inter-denominational service to mark Democracy Day on Sunday.

    By Anietie Akpan

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu has highlighted the significance of June 12, 1992, presidential election, saying its subsequent annulment fuelled Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill said the Governor stated this on Sunday during an inter-denominational Christian service at the Apostolic Church on Edgerly Road in Calabar as he paid tribute to heroes like Moshood Bashorun Abiola (M.K.O.) for their contributions to democracy in Nigeria.
