Reports of Victor Osimhen Ban Is Fake – NFF

    By Anietie Akpan

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports in some online publications that the  Super Eagles’ forward Victor Osimhen has been banned from the national team.

Osimhen had few days ago through the carried out a social media outburst that was considered offensive to the Super Eagles immediate past coach, Finidi George and the NFF, hence he was banned.

The NFF however described the report of his ban as “outright falsehood”.

The NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, expressed amazement at the reports, saying the Federation has neither instructed a process nor has a process been concluded to ban the player from the National Team.

He said, “the NFF hereby implores the media to join hands with the body to positively resolve issues and then focus on the big picture all the time, rather than needlessly escalate certain matters.

“There was no official communication from the NFF, yet some persons have gone to town to talk about a ban on Osimhen from the National Team. This is not good at all”.

Sanusi, declared, “our focus presently is to resolve all matters around the Super Eagles and be able to look ahead with confidence to the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining six matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series.

“This is not the time to spread falsehood and foul the public space the more”.

Port Manager Calls For Collaboration Among Stakeholders To Ensure Safety In Maritime Industry

The Manager, Calabar Port, Mr Olumati Festus

    By Ita Williams, Calabar

In a bid to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of port operations, the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) has called for strategic collaboration among maritime stakeholders in the country.

The appeal was made on Thursday by. the Manager of Calabar Port, Mr Olumati Festus during a public lecture titled, “Promoting Safety in Maritime Industries, Pollution Prevention, and Fire Safety,” held at the Senate chambers of the University of Calabar.

The public lecture was organized by the Department of Oceanography, University of Calabar (UNICAL), brought together various maritime stakeholders.

Festus stressed that the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy by the current administration has placed significant responsibilities on maritime stakeholders.

He said that it was crucial for them to join forces and devise strategies to enhance the ministry’s activities and fulfil its mandate. Without proper synergy among the various stakeholders, the ministry would encounter difficulties in functioning efficiently.

“We are calling for collaboration of maritime security stakeholders and the management of the Nigeria Port Authority to ensure that vessels passing through our waterways deliver goods and services without a hitch,” Festus stated.

He maintained that the activities of sea pirates and kidnappers have raised doubts among international key players in the maritime industry. The safety of vessels, personnel, and other strategic components of the sector is crucial.

He said, without a safe environment, financial institutions or insurance firms would be hesitant to guarantee letters of credit for exporters and importers whose businesses are located in areas prone to the nefarious activities of anti-maritime actors.

Festus applauded the Nigerian Navy and the Marine Police for their tireless efforts in ensuring the safety of the country’s waterways and boundaries for international trade.

He also opined that without proper synergy among maritime stakeholders, the Ministry of Blue Economy would face challenges in fulfilling its mandate.

“The establishment of the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy by the present administration has placed an enormous task on the shoulders of maritime stakeholders in ensuring that they pull their resources together and strategize to boost the activities of the ministry to deliver on its mandate,” Festus said.

  • ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN CROSS RIVER INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (CR-IRS) PRINCE EDWIN OKON

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN CROSS RIVER INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (CR-IRS) PRINCE EDWIN OKON

    By Frank Odey
It is very interesting to observe that marking one year in office has become a norm among political office holders and some private sector chieftains. This is understandable because such officers set short and long term agenda soon as they assume office which put them on focused lane.

It is against this background that one appreciates the celebration of the one year in office of the 10th Executive Chairman of the Cross River Internal Revenue Service (CR-IRS) Prince Edwin Okon. Appointed on Acting capacity on 19th July 2023 and confirmed by the State House of Assembly in March 2024, Prince Edwin Okon, an erudite professional remains optimistic that the state’s revenue potentials would be fully harnessed and an average of ₦5 billion revenue would be generated monthly in 2025 with expected total revenue of ₦60 billion. He has also set a projection of ₦70 billion and ₦80 billion for the year 2026 and 2027 respectively.

For the records, the current Executive chairman of the CR-IRS, Prince Okon upon assumption of office met an average monthly revenue of ₦1.7 billion and ₦1.8 billion. Indeed the corresponding proceeding period stood at ₦22.6 billion in 2023 but this grew to over ₦32.4 billion representing 62% growth at the end of May 2024.

Prince Okon led management upon assumption of office infused several changes that are already responding to revenue growth and overall improvement in the operations of the CR-IRS.

For instance, to achieve these projected targets, Prince Okon leadership has introduced far reaching principles and policies that have triggered steady revenue growth for the state among other things.

These include; Improved Staff Welfare: Enrollment of Adhoc Staff into the State Health Insurance Scheme to guarantee healthy workforce. Regular training and re-training of both permanent and Adhoc staff for increased performance. Improved and conducive office accommodation as well as provision o basic working tools. Robust and Expanded Taxpayers and Stakeholders Engagement(s) Regular engagement and collaboration with critical stakeholders.

Training of Revenue consultants and Agents to fully integrate into the revenue agenda of the new and rebirth IRS.

Engagements with corporate Taxpayers at their operational bass to further elicit their cooperation and compliance.

Special focus on the taxpayers’ sensitization through the traditional rulers’ machination for all inclusive participation for full implementation of the presumptive tax 2023. Increased media outreach and advocacy. Improved and Robust Automation System to Block Leakages:

The service is leveraging on the automation of our solutions partners; NUGI Technologies and Pay Talk Ltd to reduce pots of Revenue leakages.

Rolling out a dependable billing system across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to give clear and full revenue reporting, accounting and transparency.

Advocating the revenue harmonization of Local and state government to provide friendly environment to attract investments.

Administrative Restructure: Creation of new operational departments in response to the revenue aspiration of the state. Decentralization of supervision to zonal offices manned by Zonal Directors. Construction and creation of sub-Tax Offices to expand coverage and capture new taxpayers into the tax net. The return of motor vehicles administration from trama to Internal Revenue Service for effectiveness and efficiency.

Indeed, it is heartwarming that the present leadership of Prince Okon carefully carried along his management team making them to understand his policy direction and they in turn have offered him maximum co-operation which has yielded the much desired improvement in the state IGR.

While commending the doggedness, professionalism and patriotism of Prince Okon, it is crucial to praise His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Otu for carefully selecting and appointing him as the Executive Chairman of the IRS under his administration.

A critical area as the CR-IRS deserved no less, and more assuring of the bright future for the CR-IRS is the commitment of governor Otu to expanding investors and investment in the productive sector which he gave when a delegation of Trade Assessors from the World Bank visited him in May this year.

Over and above all, one commends the management team, the staff both regular and Adhoc of the CR-IRS for their team work & commitment and indeed all Cross Riverians for appreciating the need to pay their lawful taxes and levies without coercion or force.

The truth is that the job of the CR-IRS Executive Chairman will be made easier as long as the current development stride of Governor Bassey Otu is sustained. This is so because tax payers will see the essence of paying taxes and levies as at when due.

All said, and going forward the Executive Chairman needs to review the operations of some revenue collection agents who are still very uncivil in the discharge of their duties.

Happy one year anniversary Executive Chairman and your team.

  • Hard Times Await Illicit Miners In Cross River As State Government Draws Red Line

Hard Times Await Illicit Miners In Cross River As State Government Draws Red Line

The Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mr Effiom-Ekaha Otu (4th from L) with officials of the MIREMCO during the advocacy campaign…recently.

    By Anietie Akpan

Cross River State Government has drawn the red line declaring war on illicit mining in the state.

This action by the state government Pillar Today gathered, is the right step in the right direction to protect the over 34 minerals identified to be available in different parts of the state and some of the solid minerals found in commercial quantity are uranium, iron ore, manganese, tourmaline, barites, marbles, galena and sphalerite, coal, kaolin, sulphite, rutile as well as new limestone deposits and others.

In a press release on Thursday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Comrade Nsa Gill, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mr. Effiom-Ekaha Otu emphasized that the primary goal is to block illicit miners while maximizing the state revenue generated from legal mining operations and allocate it towards infrastructure development and socio-economic progress.

To achieve this, the Commissioner, in collaboration with the Chairman of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Committee (MIREMCO), have extended advocacy campaigns to rural communities to garner local support.

During a series of meetings held in Obudu, Akamkpa, Obanliku, Yala, Biase, Obubra, and other regions, Otu underscored the significant economic and environmental harm caused by illicit mining.

He emphasized that such actions contravene federal mining regulations and that the state, in cooperation with the federal government, plans to prosecute offenders.

Otu highlighted the severe consequences on agricultural land, water sources, and public health due to illicit mining expressing deep concern over the exploitation of local youth in dangerous mining activities, often leading to injuries or fatalities without any form of compensation.

The Commissioner urged traditional leaders, as custodians of the land, to reject offers from illicit miners and report such activities to the authorities.

He assured that legal mining operations, on the other hand, would benefit both the state and local communities by adhering to proper regulations and ensuring fair compensation.

Conversely, Engr. Ibem Uduma from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development encouraged communities to ensure that mining agreements are transparent and involve key stakeholders, including security personnel and government officials.

Similarly, the State Chairman of MIREMCO, Dr Otu Archibong, stressed the importance of communities verifying government approval for any mineral exploration. He outlined the requisite legal procedures, such as environmental and social impact assessments, licensing, and rehabilitation plans.

Community leaders and youth representatives expressed their support for the government’s initiatives and pledged cooperation to combat illicit mining.

They also appealed to the government to create employment opportunities to alleviate economic pressures driving illicit mining activities.

The state government’s initiative aims to regularize mining operations, safeguard the environment, and substantially increase revenue from legal mining activities as the additional revenue will be channelled towards enhancing the state’s infrastructure and fostering socio-economic development.

Recall that the State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, recently visited the Minister for Solid Minerals Development, Mr Dele Alake in his office in Abuja and revealed that the state was on the verge of joining other states in operating a mining company, having applied for a license as a limited liability company.

He emphasized the State’s commitment to leveraging its vast mineral resources for state development stressing the importance of partnering with the ministry to combat illegal mining activities.

In Constant Pursuit of Distinction: A Tribute

L-R: Mrs. Ntekpe Inoyo, the chairperson of Inoyo Toro Foundation; Dr. George Akpan; Barrister Grace Akapn; and Inoyo.

    By Udom Inoyo

To those who excel, their admirers never want them to quit the scene. Tiger Woods dominated the golf world and opened opportunities for those outside the mainstream to engage in golfing. Though not performing at his peak today, the roar of ‘Go, Tiger’ reverberates through the course whenever he plays.

I remember the response of many when Usain Bolt, arguably the fastest runner, retired in 2017. For football enthusiasts, we still have Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, and others playing with such admirable skills, even if not in our ‘preferred’ league.

Many were disappointed back home when Vincent Enyeama retired early from the Super Eagles in 2015. Last year, when I had a round of golf with him at Ibom Golf Course, Uyo, he looked younger and played with agility.

One must be of a different stock not to applaud continued excellence in every sphere of life: sports, entertainment, public service, and private practice. But it takes hard work, determination, and a conducive environment.

So, you can imagine the void created when my young friend, Dr. George Akpan, retired and left Nigeria for Canada, taking his brilliance and inspiration with him.

In 2014, I was opportune to be the guest speaker at the 19th/20th convocation of the University of Uyo. In my speech, I reflected on the many alums I know who have done well. I shared the story of a young man from Akwa Ibom state who was born in a village where, until the 1980s, the ambition of every child was to finish primary school, learn a trade, and get married. Going to secondary school was a rarity.

But he had a different dream. When he finished his primary education, he proceeded to the ‘ultimate’ secondary school, and it was only when he got there that he knew that there was something called ‘ufok nwed nta ifiok’ (the citadel of learning…University).

Nobody from his community had ever been there. Without financial security, he acquired two master’s degrees, a doctorate, and others. This dreamer was Dr. George Akpan, a Senior Counsel for ExxonMobil Companies in Nigeria for about fifteen years.

His journey was not easy, filled with financial hardships and societal expectations, but his determination and resilience led him to overcome these challenges and achieve his dreams. We came here to honour him at his call to the Alberta Bar.

As we know, the process leading to this achievement is long, competitive, and sometimes tortuous. There is no shortcut or favour. Foreign-qualified lawyers must first be assessed by the National Committee on Accreditation before one is assigned courses to study, often up to ten, with an expectation to conclude within five years. Only after passing these designated courses can one apply for a Bar Program in the Province where he/she intends to practice law.

The bar program itself is another significant step, with a 12-month Articling and a 10-month, PREP program, culminating in another examination, the CAPSTONE, in Alberta, the success in which finally admits one to the bar.

For George, I know these burdensome steps went alongside other competing roles: being a good spouse and father, a family and community supporter, and providing mentorship to many youths back home.

Additionally, he never shirked his responsibilities as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Inoyo Toro Foundation, a role he has played in the last 18 years to promote teaching excellence in Akwa Ibom state public secondary schools.

His achievements would not have been possible without his family’s unwavering support and understanding, especially Grace, his lovely wife, and children Anita, Jesse, and Bernice, who stood by him through thick and thin. For that, we are all grateful.

George’s testimony should be a wake-up call to millions of Nigerian youths eager for success. Never give up! Luckily, we are in the 21st century, driven by innovation and technology, and offering multiple opportunities.

  • Mr. Budget Bows Out

    Mr. Budget Bows Out

    Ben Ifeanyichukwu Akabueze

    OPINION

    By Etim Etim

President Muhammadu Buhari was less than a year in office when he realized that his officials would not be able to produce the budget for FY 2017 on time. His Budget and National Planning Minister, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, was frantically seeking help, not only to produce the federal proposal, but also to reform and reposition the entire budgeting process. The 2016 appropriation bill was signed into law by the president very late in the year; and it was replete with irregularities.

It then was clear to senior administration officials that the Budget Office of the Federation, an agency responsible for designing and drawing up the federal government’s budget proposals, required an experienced and suitably qualified leader to do the job. The man at the saddle then was clearly below his depth. Fourteen years earlier, Senator Udoma was the chairman of the Senate’s Appropriation Committee – an influential and powerful Committee that scrutinizes and approves the federal budgets and those of its over 300 parastatals. He knows a lot about the budgeting process and technicalities involved, and was therefore in a hurry to headhunt a man of requisite and cognate skills to lead the Budget Office.

Enter Ben Ifeanyichukwu Akabueze. Early in 2016, Akabueze was appointed Special Adviser to the President on National Planning, but his job description did not include budget preparations. He had observed the debacle in the Budget Office and all the commotion surrounding the 2016 proposals, but in the nature of Nigeria’s public service, he could only offer suggestions. Somebody then mentioned to Udoma that Ben was the right man to fix the mess. After a few consultations and discussions and Senator Udoma’s recommendation, the president promptly moved Akabueze to the to the Budget Office as the sixth Director General with a clear mandate to ensure the presentation of the annual budgets to the National Assembly by September of every year; review the annual budget and advise on the necessity or otherwise of a supplementary budget and reconcile and monitor monthly performance of key revenue agencies.

A fellow of three renowned professional bodies, (Institute of Chartered Accountants; Chartered Institute of Bankers and institute of Credit Administration), Akabueze came highly recommended for the assignment, and he soon proved that his selection was one of Buhari’s few fit-for-purpose appointments. Ben or Pastor Ben, as friends fondly call him, is one of the nation’s brightest, analytical yet unassuming professionals.

For about nine years prior, he had served as the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Lagos State, having been appointed by Gov. Tinubu in 2006 and reappointed by Gov. Fashola in 2007. Before then, he was the Managing Director & CEO of NAL Bank (now Sterling Bank) from 2000 to 2005.

There were rumours then that it was Asiwaju Tinubu, then National Leader of the APC, that had facilitated his appointment as the SA to the President, and subsequent deployment to the BOF. Both Akabueze and Udoma refused to comment on this when I asked them. A few months after Ben took the job, Senator Udoma told me in his office. ‘’I am lucky to have Ben around. He is sorting out the headaches in the Budget Office’’. I told Udoma that I knew Akabueze well, and that he had in December 2000 tapped me to lead the Corporate Communications department at NAL. ‘’He will make a difference’’, I assured him. I have been blessed to walk and work with the best of Nigerians in my long careers spanning two professions. Akabueze’s leadership and accomplishments as the nation’s chief budget officer between 2016 and 2024 are transformative, tangible and outstanding. I salute him for his unblemished records and sterling achievements in all of the two terms. He served with dedication, diligence and commitment.

Under him, the budget office recorded improvements in the quality and comprehensiveness of the budget documents, leveraging technology to achieve improved levels of citizens’ engagements in the budgeting process. We now have full disclosures of federal government’s payments; improved transparency, governance, service delivery and accountability. Multi-lateral and bi-lateral project tied loans as well as grants and donor-funded projects are now reflected in the federal government budget, unlike in the past when the process was marred by opacity and lack of clarity.

In addition, fiscal risks and contingent liabilities are also included in the budget pack. There’s been also improved coordination and collaboration between the executive and legislature leading to a return to the predictable January-December budget cycle, for the first time since 1999. Until then, it was only the military regimes that were able to issue budget speeches on New Year Day.

Another important change that Ben and his team introduced is the inclusion of the budgets of all government-owned enterprises in the federal budget presented by the president to the National Assembly. Further, there’s also been significant improvements in the budget and expenditure management of the MDAs.

Internally, Akabueze also restructured the BOF and took his management and staff through a visioning process that developed a vision and mission statement for the organization. Its mission is to provide efficient and qualitative budget functions to Nigeria, geared towards promoting fiscal sustainability, transparency and accountability in public finance management for national development in line with international best practices. Clearly, the achievements listed above are in with the mission. Its vision is to be a world-class technology-driven budget institution that is a catalyst for equitable distribution of the nation’s resources to engender sustainable socio-economic development. It is for no reason that he’s also known as Mr. Budget.

Last week, I asked Akabueze to review his tenure at BOF and all the other significant positions he’s held. As he is wont to do, he contemplated the question for a while and then said, ’I have done my best. Nigerians should do the assessment’.

Gov Otu Resuscitates  Construction Of Adiabo-Ikoneto Road Abandoned  30-Years Ago

Governor Bassey Otu cutting the tape to signal commencement of work on the Adiabo-Ikoneto road while others look on.

    By Anietie Akpan

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River state has resuscitated the construction of the Adiabo-Ikoneto road in Odukpani Local Government Area of the state abandoned 30 years ago.

Findings by Pillar Today showed that the 11 km road which was facilitated by the then Minister of Finance, Etubom Anthony Ani was abandoned with the demise of the then Military Head  of State General Sani Abacha and the subsequent desolation of his government despite the payment of almost 100 percent of the contract sum to the contractors.

However on Monday, Governor Otu did the epoch ground-breaking ceremony for the commencement of work on the road, restoring hope and joy to the hitherto disillusioned people of Adiabo, Ikoneto and others that usually spend over two hours from Calabar through the Calabar-Itu road to Ikoneto or Creek Town.

But when the road is completed, trip from Calabar to Ikoneto or Creek Town will be done within 30 minutes.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony in Adiabo community, Otu in a statement as captured by his Chief Press Secretary, Comrade Nsa Gill, expressed gladness for the commencement of work on the road saying, “this road has been a vision and dream.

He said, “it gave me a lot of pain when work on this project stopped a few decades ago and it looked like its completion would never happen. But I never knew that God was going to use me to get this project to fruition.”

The Governor thanked the people for their long-standing support throughout his political journey pointing out that the Adiabo-Ikoneto road, when completed, will bring development to the area and also to the state.

He noted that the road would yield ease of access to Creek Town Road at the Odukpani area of the state as he recalled that the road should have been fixed since the regime of Late General Abacha.

“We know what infrastructure does to every community. We are making an effort to take infrastructure to all nooks and crannies in the state. What we are doing here, we are also doing in Calabar; in the central district, and in the northern senatorial district. We are not leaving any locality out of it. We have shared the resources in a way and manner that is balanced so that our aggregate growth as a state can come off structurally”, he said.

While noting that his administration is working tirelessly to ensure government presence is evident and felt at rational quota in every part of the state, he maintained that “this government came to change the narrative and add value to life. We will create an economy that will carry everybody along, and also opportunities for everyone to benefit.”

Otu tasked inhabitants of Adiabo-Ikoneto to be law-abiding, and supportive to the project as discipline remains a critical ingredient for building a serene and robust society.

Otu expressed his belief that the project contractor, Zenith Construction Company Limited, which had been part of the abandoned project since its inception over two decades ago, having a good knowledge of the nagging issues of the project, would bring its expertise to bear and deliver the job in record time.

In his remarks, the Lead Engineer of Zenith Construction Company Limited, Engr Tony Makhlof, expressed delight at the re-commencement of the project after over 30 years of  and thanked the governor and his cabinet for graciously approving the construction of the road.

The construction company pledged to deliver on the project following contractual obligations, quality assurance and utmost professionalism.

On his part, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Pius Ankpo, said the about 11-kilometre project will involve the construction of three bridges across swampy areas but it  is commencing with the first phase of 4.5 kilometres, to make for effective resource management.

He promised that his Ministry would provide the professional supervision of the project to be completed at the stipulated 18-months period.

The flagging off ceremony was graced by the Obong of Calabar His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V and many others.

Otu Charges World Bank, UN, To Bridge Global Economic Gaps, Balance World’s Economy

Governor Bassey Otu (5th from R), the World Bank Trade Team  leader, Aleksandar Stojorov (6th R) and others during the visit…recently.

    By Anietie Akpan

Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu has charged the World Bank, United Nations (UN) and other multilateral agencies to bridge global economic gaps and balance world’s economy.

Governor Otu in a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Comrade Nsa Gill, made the call recently when he hosted a team from the World Bank in Calabar, the state capital saying if that is done, it will assist in bridging the socioeconomic gap between Africa and the rest of the world.

The team was in the state on a fact-finding mission to federal government agencies in the state as well as looking at issues limiting trans-African free trade.

Otu, who described the team’s visit as timely, stated that it became imperative to reduce the barriers inhibiting free trade, especially in the Africa region.

He said, “my call to the World Bank is to strive to balance the world’s economy. We still have a lot of migrant pressures across the world. This is because the global economy is not stable. Once the economy is unbalanced, there is always going to be that pressure.

“It is time for things to be relaxed for other regions to grow at their own pace. International organizations like the World Bank and United Nations should make effort to ensure that things are balanced”.

In Cross River, “we have all it takes in terms of resources and productivity, the governor said adding, that “there still lies some variance.
