Insecurity, Governance Gaps Pose Challenges To Food Security, Don

    By Anietie Akpan

The 137th Inaugural Lecturer of the University of Calabar (Unical), Prof. Susana Ben Ohen, has said that climate change, insecurity, post-harvest losses, policy, and governance gaps pose challenges to the food security situation in Nigeria.

Prof. Ohen stated this at the Unical International Conference Centre while delivering the institution’s inaugural lecture on the topic; “Bridging the Gap: Market Intermediaries, Ecosystems and the Quest for Sustainable Food Security in a Changing World” on Wednesday.

In a press release from the Public Relations Unlt of the University, she said, armed conflicts and banditry in farming regions disrupt food production and distribution, saying it is a common trend in the northwest as farmers have abandoned their farms due to frequent attacks, leading to reduced agricultural output.

She said, “the insurgency in the northeastern region has displaced millions of farmers, significantly disrupting agricultural activities and food supply chains and this greatly impacts food stability in the country”.

Ohen, a Professor of Marketing and Agribusiness Management, averred that poor storage facilities and inadequate transportation infrastructure result in significant losses of perishable crops.

The Don said inconsistent agricultural policies and insufficient investment in the sector undermine efforts to achieve food security.

The Inaugural Lecturer said while Nigeria is a leading producer of staples such as cassava, yams, and rice, the country still faces food deficits, adding that this is largely due to low agricultural productivity caused by outdated farming methods, insufficient mechanization, and post-harvest losses.

Prof. Ohen said that, “economic instability, high poverty rates, and food price inflation hinder access to food as over 40 percent of Nigerians live below the poverty line, making it difficult for many to afford sufficient and nutritious food”.

She said poor dietary diversity and inadequate nutritional education affect food utilization in Nigeria, adding that the high consumption of carbohydrate-heavy diets often leads to micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among children and women.

While proffering solutions to the food insecurity situation in Nigeria, the Inaugural lecturer said, “Nigeria must transform its food system to be more efficient and inclusive to ensure food and nutrition security as the population doubles over the next 30 years.

“Addressing these challenges requires targeted interventions, including improved infrastructure, regulatory oversight, and farmer empowerment, to maximize the positive contributions of middlemen while mitigating their negative impacts.”

The Don said by addressing key challenges such as low agricultural productivity, insecurity, and post-harvest losses, Nigeria can improve its food systems and achieve sustainable food security.

The Vice Chancellor of Unical, Prof. Florence Obi, in her remarks, eulogized the inaugural lecturer for doing justice to the lecture topic, describing her as a knowledgeable academic whose contributions in the academic world have shaped lives.

While presenting a memento to the Inaugural lecturer, the Vice Chancellor said the University is proud of her for paying her ‘intellectual debt’ and urged other Professors to follow suit.

Calabar Residents, Government Trade Blames as Nursing Student Fllood Victim Goes Home for Burial

    Late Miss Awhobiwom Ukah.

    By Anietie Akpan

Residents of Calabar and the Ctoss River State Government have traded blames over the Good Friday flood incident that drowned and swept away Miss  Awhobiwom Ukah, a second year Nursing student of the Federal College of Nursing Sciences, Calabar.

The 25-year-old nursing student on Tuesday, April 22, had slipped into a wide and deadly gutter along Ediba road near Marian market and was swept away into the about four kilometre Calabar Channel one drainage from the Ediba axis that spans through Big Qua, Barracks road, Bogobiri by Maryslessor, Target by Goldie street, crossing into Murray street, Palm street, crossing Inyang street before emptying into the swampy area of CRUTECH, now the University of Cross River State (UNICROS) in Ekpo Abasi area.

Another stretch of the drainage is the Chanel two of  1.7 Kilometres that evacuates water from State housing and its environs to the Calabar River in Essien Town, diverting  water from the WAPPI junction axis of the Murtala Mohammed highway.

However, after five days of search, since she was swept away by floodwaters during a heavy downpour on the Good Friday, the swollen body of Miss Ukah, was recovered from the Palm street axis of the giant Calabar channel one drainage.

This means that the drain must have traveled with the innocent Nursing student through the deadly channel for over four kilometres before she was waged at the Palm street axis.

Some residents of Calabar have blamed successive state governments that have neglected the maintenance of drainages or even covering them with slabs to avoid reoccurring disasters over the years.

They  called for on the Governor Bassey Otu led government for an urgent intervention by fixing all open gutters in Ediba and other areas in Calabar following the tragic Good Friday incident.

The deceased according to eyewitnesses, had attended the Stations of the Cross and Good Friday Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Big Qua Town near the bustling Marian Market in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area (LGA), when the heartbreaking incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses said, Miss Ukah “was walking home with her umbrella in around 8 p.m. with other parishioners when she slipped into a flooded and poorly lit gutter in the night after a heavy downpour that had flooded the streets near Eastern Secondary School”.

“She was shouting for help. We tried to reach her, but the current was too strong. Then we couldn’t hear her anymore.” a source close to the family said.

A resident of the area, Mrs. Eno Effiom, almost in tears said, “this is not the first time we have lost someone to these open gutters. Every time it rains, the roads turn into rivers. We have pleaded with the government for years, but nothing changes, at least they should try and cover the gutters”.

Another eye witness, Emmanuel Orok described the incident as traumatic saying, “she was  someone’s daughter, a future nurse. Her death is a result of negligence. We can’t keep losing lives like this,” he said charging the state government “to do something very urgent before another life is lost”.

The Chairperson of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Cross River State Chapter,  Josephine Bassey, confirmed the incident and expressed her condolences.

She described the flood incident as “very unfortunate. I only got to know she was a student nurse after seeing posts online. She had just gotten into her second year. We pray for strength for her family and the college to bear this loss”.

Meanwhile family sources said her remains were deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital morgue and was later on Wednesday, April 23, transported to her hometown, Ohong community in Obudu Local Government Area, for burial on.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Moses Osoji, expressed deep sympathy to the family and described the incident as both unfortunate and preventable.

Osoji acknowledged the pain and grief such a loss brings saying the government shares in the sorrow of the affected family but stressed that while the government has taken proactive steps to address flood risks — including desilting gutters and preparing for the rainy season since December — community behavior remains a major challenge.

He said, “no government wants to see lives lost in such a manner, we have done a lot of work to mitigate flooding, but when people continue to dump waste into open drains instead of using bins, it undermines those efforts.”

“The flood is not just a government problem. It’s a community issue. Until attitudes change, we will continue to see tragedies like this”, Osuji stated, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility and urged residents to adopt safer, more environmentally conscious habits.

    By Dianabasi Effiong

Nigeria’s U20 boys, Flying Eagles, on Tuesday, defeated their Egyptian counterparts, Young Pharaohs, 2-1 in a pre-Africa U20 Cup of Nations friendly at the Cairo International Stadium.

Kparobo Arierhi, who scored three goals as Nigeria successfully defended her WAFU B U20 Championship title in Lome in October (including a brace in the final that dashed Ghana’s hopes), scored Nigeria’s first in the 10th minute of the encounter.

He scored from a good pass from Bidemi Amole.

The Young Pharaohs equalised in the 65th minute through Ahmed Kaabaka.

However, a dominant Nigeria side shot into the lead again with seven minutes left on the clock after Precious Benjamin made no mistake from the spot, following a foul on Divine Oliseh in the hosts’ eighteen-yard box.

Seven-time African champions Nigeria achieved the morale-boosting victory less than 48 hours after arriving in the Egyptian capital for the 17th Africa U20 Cup of Nations, which gets underway on Sunday.

The Flying Eagles’ first match is against Tunisia on Thursday next week, before further games against Morocco and Kenya in Group B.

On their part, hosts Egypt, who head Group A, will take on South Africa on Sunday before further games against Sierra Leone on 30th April, Zambia on 3rd May, and Tanzania on May 9.

FG’s Naira-For-Crude Deal, Solution For Cost of Living Crisis – Group

    President Bola Tinubu.

    By Dianabasi Effiong

The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has lauded the Federal Government’s decision to make the naira-for-crude policy permanent, describing it as a sustainable solution to the cost of living crisis in the country.

The group made this known on Tuesday through its Chairman, Emeka Nwankpa, and Secretary, Dapo Okubanjo.

It stated that the decision would lay to rest the heightened anxiety that trailed the suspension of the policy at the end of the initial six-month arrangement with local refiners.

“Like all Nigerians, we saw how President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the sale of crude in naira to local refineries significantly reduced the cost of petroleum products from the Dangote Refinery at the outset of the policy.

“We also acknowledge that at the time it was introduced in October 2024, it was for six months in the first instance, subject to negotiations, but now the administration has made it a permanent key policy initiative which it said was ‘designed to support sustainable local refining’.

“This, for us, is a good development that will help conserve foreign exchange, especially as there will be no need for the use of dollars for domestic crude or petroleum products transactions,” the TMSG stated.

It also stated that the Federal government’s decision would keep the pump price of fuel and other petroleum products stable.

“Invariably, this will guarantee energy security with a resultant positive effect on the cost of living in a country where prices of goods and services are tied to fuel prices.

“So by ensuring that local refiners do not have to scramble for foreign exchange to buy crude, the government has effectively stalled the unnecessary increase in the pump price of fuel.

“We now expect oil marketers to take advantage of the new policy and ensure that it reflects in the pricing of fuel once the new policy takes full effect,” it stated.

The group also expressed hope that the relief expected from the policy would translate to a reduction in prices of goods and services in the long run.

  • OPINION: Umo Eno, Tinubu and the 2027 Election

OPINION: Umo Eno, Tinubu and the 2027 Election

    Gov. Umo Eno.

    By Etim Etim

The most topical political issue this Easter weekend is Gov. Umo Eno’s public endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term and the discussions it generated across the country.

Eno is a PDP governor who has not hidden his affection and support for the President and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and has succeeded in building bridges across political divide in his state. On many occasions, he has asked Akwa Ibom people, irrespective of party leanings, to rally around the two leaders; but this week, he took the platitude a notch higher.

At the flag off of the Akwa Ibom section of the controversial Lagos-Calabar coastal road on Tuesday, the governor announced to the assembled crowd of APC and PDP chieftains that ‘’President Tinubu will be reelected for a second term and I will support him’’.  APC members applauded and cheered him, while PDP chieftains looked stunned in disbelief.

At another event the following day at Ikot Ekpene township stadium, the governor repeated the same pro-Tinubu message, this time with additional flavour. ‘’I will tell you the reason when the time comes and you will see with me why we should support him so that he can complete what he started. You will see what he’s doing for our state and you will know why we should not go elsewhere’’, he said.

APC supporters and members in the audience, which included Senator Akpabio’s wife, applauded; but PDP stalwarts appeared nonplussed. In return, Mrs Akpabio, apparently speaking the husband’s mind, also endorsed the governor and asked the people to support his reelection ‘’irrespective of the party you belong to’’, noting that the governor has performed well in office. She was essentially returning a favour the governor has extended to Akpabio since he was elected Senate President in 2023.

Since he assumed office two years ago, the  governor has kept a safe distance from partisan controversies, but this is the first time he’d be in the news for openly rooting for his opponents. For being the first PDP governor to break rank with his party and openly campaign for the reelection of the President, Eno has created a stir in PDP and upended political calculations in some quarters. If this were in the Second Republic when political parties were managed almost like a military formation, the governor would be accused of anti party activities, but this is Nigeria of 2025 when indiscipline is writ large in the parties and rules, norms and traditions are obeyed in the breach.  The PDP itself has been systematically weakened by its own internal contradictions. After all, a former governor and PDP chieftain is serving in Tinubu’s cabinet as a prominent minister, and he’s using his position to further undermine the party.  So, Eno is justified to chart his course.

Speculations are rife on the possible reasons behind the governor’s decision not to support his party in the next election. Many even conjecture that it’s a somewhat quid pro quo strategy to cement his own reelection. But the governor waved that off. ‘’I support the president’s re election because I’m convinced that the South must complete eight years in the presidency, just as the North did’’, he said in an exclusive interview with me on Good Friday evening. ‘’My party (PDP) must do the right thing, and we must put our house in order. Can you show us a credible alternative to President Tinubu at this moment? The President is doing his best and we should support him’’, he said, stressing, however, that he is not planning to defect from his party.

Gov. Eno’s romance with APC has many implications. He is essentially taking a dig at Atiku Abubarkar who is clearly looking to contest again in 2027. The 78-year-old former Vice President was the standard bearer of PDP in the last two presidential elections, even going against the rotation between North and South in 2023. Many PDP leaders have asked him not to run again so as to make way for fresh hands to lead the party. But Atiku seems adamant and there are indications that his entry into 2027 race may further divide the party. APC leaders in Akwa Ibom are understandably excited at the turn of events. Chief Don Etiebet, former Petroleum Minister and APC leader, praised the governor for endorsing the president and commended Senator Akpabio for backing the governor for a second term.

But some PDP leaders are not sure of what to make of their governor’s position.  Some like State Party Chairman Emmanuel Akpan and Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN, who was the chairman of the governor’s election political group, refused to comment when I called. But a few are quite clear-headed about it. Says Isantim Kenneth Okon, Chairman of Ibom Community Watch, the state’s security outfit: ‘’the governor is our leader; when he speaks, we listen; and when he moves, we follow. But in this case, the governor should ensure that we get something in return from the president. President Tinubu will have to return the favour by supporting the state government’s desire to develop a deep sea port. The port will change the economy of Akwa Ibom forever and it’s very dear to our people’’. I agree with Okon on this, and it’s a point Gov. Eno also emphasized when we spoke.

The governor rejects the assumption that he’s supporting Tinubu in order to secure the president’s backing for his own re election. He told me: ‘’By the grace of God, I am a contented man. I will forever remain thankful to God, my political father Udom Emmanuel and Akwa Ibom people for their trust. I will always follow my conscience. I have my conviction to support this president to succeed. If God is for me, what can man do for me?’’

Meanwhile, Eno deserves some credit for building cross-party political alliance between PDP and APC in the state. If it is firmed up and implemented, he and Akpabio would be returned unopposed and President Tinubu will go beyond the 30% threshold APC has scored in the last two presidential elections in the state. It will also bring an end to the gubernatorial ambitions of folks like Senator Ita Enang and Senator Bassey Albert who have been warming up to run again in 2027. The loser would be the PDP which scored over 50% of the vote in the 2023 presidential race. But if this alliance fails, a big political battle will ensue in the state.

The Cross River State Government has officially introduced a new annual event into its tourism calendar.

The event, titled “Carnival Parade of Thanksgiving and Festival of Praise” — popularly known as the “Jesus Carnival” — will be held every Easter season.

A release from the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill, said the maiden edition took place on Easter Monday in the state capital, Calabar, and was flagged off by the Governor, Apostle Bassey Edet Otu, alongside his wife,Bishop Eyoawan Bassey Otu.

The colorful and spiritually charged event, marked by splendor and cultural flair, is a spiritual offshoot of the globally celebrated Carnival Calabar, traditionally held every December.

Organizers explained that the Jesus Carnival is designed as a moment of collective gratitude to God for the success of Carnival Calabar and the continued progress of the state. It blends faith, culture, and thanksgiving into a unique Christian celebration during the Easter season.

A prototype giant Bible on one of the trucks at the Jesus Carnival on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otu declared: “Jesus Christ has taken Cross River State to unimaginable heights within two years of this administration. From inception, I declared this a Godly state, and Jesus the true Governor. Easter Monday has now been set aside to celebrate Jesus and to say, ‘Father, thank You for how far You’ve brought us.’ The story of Cross River State is changing for the better. I’m grateful to all the men and women of God who have continually kept the state in their prayers.”

He called on more Christians to join the effort to pray for Cross River, emphasizing that “no investment in the things of God is ever wasted.” The Governor also thanked the large contingent of clergy who led their congregations in participating in the event.

The parade route covered several strategic locations across Calabar Municipality and Calabar South, including Millennium Park, Watt Market, Nelson Mandela Street, Target Street, and the Mary Slessor Roundabout, before returning to the main carnival corridor as  Prayers were offered at various roundabouts along the way, adding a spiritual dimension to the march.

Governor Otu and his wife danced and sang alongside thousands of Christian faithful, with gospel music echoing through the streets in a jubilant expression of faith.

Bishop Eyoawan Otu, speaking before the flag-off, said the vision for the Easter event was inspired by a desire to dedicate a significant part of the tourism calendar to Jesus Christ.

“While Carnival Calabar is a secular celebration, this is a spiritual festival — one created to honour Christ for His sacrifice and celebrate our faith as a people,” she explained.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Event Management, Mr. Effiong Ekpenyong, described the Jesus Carnival as the brainchild of the First Lady, crediting her prayerful support for much of the administration’s success.

He coordinated the parade’s logistics and highlighted its significance as a new attraction in the state’s growing tourism offerings.

“With this spiritually uplifting addition to its tourism calendar, Cross River State has reaffirmed its identity as a place where culture and faith intersect—making Easter not just a religious observance, but a state-wide celebration of divine gratitude and praise,” he concluded.

The celebration culminated with live gospel music performances, headlined by internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter, and producer, Cobhams Asuquo, whose electrifying performance left the crowd in awe.

Prayers were led by prominent religious leaders, including the State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Takis Etim Caiafas; Bishop Josef Bassey; Bishop Emma Isong; Bishop Bassey E. Edem; Apostle Frank Umoh, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs; and several others across various Christian denominations.
