Chief Bassey Ekpo Bassey jnr; leading a procession of family members and others during the memorial service at A.M.E. Zion Church on Saturday.

    By Anietie Akpan

It was a week long of celebrations and protocols in memory of a veteran journalist and an Ekpe title holder, Etubom Bassey Ekpo Bassey that culminated in a memorial service on Saturday, April 5 at A.M.E. Zion Church, Diamond, in the city of Calabar, Cross River state.

It was a beautiful and solemn service that commenced with a processional hymn of, “it is well with my soul” ushering in the family members led by Chief Bassey Ekpo Bassey Jnr.

Typical of church services, the congregation was called to worship and invocation and hymn of adoration, “Great is thy faithfulness”rendered before Bassey jnr and one of the sisters, Uyi read their father’s biography.

Delivering the word, the officiating Minister, Rev. Uwem Usen stressed the need for people to be good in the society and impact positively in whatever position they find themselves.

Drawing reference from  Mathew 26:6-13 where Jesus told his disciples not to consider the very costly fragrant oil the woman at Bethany poured on Him as a waste because “wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what the woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her “

She said from the biography presented by his children, it is obvious that Etubom Bassey “has done much and he is remembered for it, so for us the living, what will you be remembered for?”

“We should make name for ourselves in good things we do”, Rev. Usen said, adding that, “Etubom Bassey worked for mankind and his community”.

The woman of God told the large congregation that, “life does not end here on earth but after this life, there is another life that we don’t have control over”, hence we should give account of ourselves while on earth.

She said some take working for God by participating in various church activities as a waste and warned, “don’t take your work with God as a waste. Give God your time for it is not a waste” just as when Jesus told his disciples not to consider the expensive fragrant oil the woman poured on Him as a waste.

“Etubom is remembered for so many things but what will you be remembered for;” she asked.

Making reference to Philippians 1:3, which Paul and Timothy told the people of Philippi,  “I thank my God upon every  remembrance of you”, Rev. Usen emphasized the need for us to do good things saying, “don’t take any position you hold for granted …Certainly his family and the people will remember Etubom for his good deeds.

“Your commitment to God, your family, community is not a waste  .  The life that you live is for Christ”.

The about two and half hours service ended with another procession to the deceased refurbished beautiful colonial edifice, that tells the story of Calabar and tourism.

There, the “Thou my everlasting portion” hymn was rendered and prayer offered for the  departed soul of the radical politician and socialist who “constantly sought platforms, obviously not to feather his nest, but to be used in whatever way possible to change the lives of the people he cared about”.

Why Governor Otu Cancelled Approved Leave Extension by Assembly

    Gov. Bassey Otu .

    By Anietie Akpan

Facts have emerged that Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu’s cancellation of his leave extension by the State House of Assembly was due to his appointment as the Chairman of the Screening Committee of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship primary in Anambra state.

Too sources told Pillar Today that, “the Governor is back in the country and he is in Awka already to commence the party’s national assignment.

“As a result of this, the Governor needed to cancel the leave extension and honour the national assignment from the party. And immediately after the primary on Saturday, April 5, he will return back to Calabar to resume work”.

It was also gathered that there was a mix up between the Speaker and the Secretary to State Government as it is said that there was no formal go ahead for the extension from the Governor even though the State House of Assembly had while approving the earlier three weeks leave said there may be an extension if the need arises.

A press release dated April 4 by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Matthew Okache said Governor Otu has officially resumed duty, opting not to proceed with the two-week leave extension earlier approved by the State House of Assembly.

The release said, “the development was made known to the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, via a phone call from the Governor, during which he informed the Speaker of his decision to resume official duties immediately.

“According to the Governor, the decision to cancel the leave extension was due to adjustments in his earlier scheduled engagements, which have been rescheduled, necessitating his early return to duty.

“The Assembly had, during its April 4 plenary, approved the extension following a formal request transmitted to the House and read by the Clerk”.

Recall that Governor Otu, had communicated to the State Legislative Assembly that he will commence an annual leave from March 11 to April 8.

Accordingly, the State House of Assembly on March 11, accepted the communication from the governor for the three weeks annual leave.

“The Governor is here by granted three weeks leave effective from Tuesday 11th March to 8th April 2025. If need be the leave will be extended to enable the Governor rest so that he can continue the good work that he is doing in the State.” Ayambem noted.

  • Elisha Abbo’s Allegations Against President of the Senate is Baseless, Eyiboh

Elisha Abbo’s Allegations Against President of the Senate is Baseless, Eyiboh

    Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

    By Anietie Akpan

The allegations against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio by Mr. Elisha Abbo blaming the former for his ouster from the Senate has been described as “spurious, malicious and baseless”.

Special Adviser, Media/Publicity and official Spokesperson to the President of the Senate, Rt Hon Eseme Eyiboh in statement dated April 3, said Abbo, unlawfully represented Adamawa North Senatorial District until he was sacked by the court.

Eyiboh said Abbo has again sought to blame the President of the Senate for the travail of his judicial sanction that occasioned his ouster from the Senate and “it is sad and regrettable that despite publicly retracting a similar allegation in 2023—after admitting that his earlier accusation was ‘premature and based on the available information at our disposa’, Mr. Abbo has once again embarked on a campaign of misinformation and blame transfer”.

He said, “following a discussion with the Senate President last year, Mr. Abbo himself acknowledged that Senator Akpabio had ‘no involvement’ in the judicial process that led to his removal. It is puzzling that he would now return to the same baseless allegations he once renounced.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Court of Appeal, after a thorough legal process, ruled unequivocally that Mr. Abbo’s presence in the Red Chamber was in error. The court determined that he was not validly elected as the Senator for Adamawa North, and consequently, he was removed.

“The court acted in accordance with the extant laws and the Constitution within its sacred duty to uphold the rule of law. Senator Akpabio, a seasoned lawyer and democrat, holds the independence of the judiciary in the highest regard and would never interfere in its processes”.

Eyiboh said, “it is therefore both illogical and irresponsible for Mr. Abbo to now turn around and allege that the Senate President influenced a court judgment—a judgment which he himself accepted at the time and for which he expressed contrition for his earlier unfounded claims. ( see Punch newspaper of 18th October, 2023).

“Mr. Abbo has also sought to create the impression that he was unjustly denied official benefits following his ouster. He claims entitlement to salaries, allowances, and even an official vehicle, despite the court’s declaration that his tenure was null and void ab initio”.

In matters of financial and administrative processing, he said, it must be stated that the Senate President only approves payments that have been duly vetted and forwarded by the appropriate administrative units, in line with extant laws, Senate procedures, and standard due diligence practices.

“If any of Mr. Abbo’s claims for payment did not reach the desk of the Senate President, it is because they failed to meet these lawful standards—not because of any personal or political vendetta.

“It is unfortunate that instead of accepting the consequences of his legal and political failings, Mr. Abbo continues to resort to media theatrics and reckless finger-pointing. Even more telling is his record of public conduct. Nigerians will recall that in 2019, he was caught on video assaulting a female citizen in Abuja—an incident for which he was ordered by a competent court to pay N50 million in damages. This is a matter of public record and speaks volumes about his temperament and disposition.

“His recent outbursts about unpaid travels and imagined plots further reinforce the conclusion that his actions are driven not by facts or principle, but by bitterness and desperation to remain politically relevant. These claims are not only baseless, but they reek of grievance and a refusal to accept personal responsibility for his removal and loss of public trust”, Eyiboh stated.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, he said, “remains focused on the noble task of nation-building, providing purposeful leadership in the Senate, and strengthening democratic institutions—especially the independence of the judiciary. He will not be distracted by the antics of individuals who seek to rewrite history to mask personal failures.

“We urge Mr. Abbo to reflect deeply, respect the rule of law, and focus on rebuilding the confidence of his constituents if he hopes to return to public life. Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when its actors show maturity, responsibility, and an abiding respect for the truth”.

Everybody can feel the heat due to climate change. If you lived in Calabar 20 years ago, you will know that the amount of rainfall we used to have is not the same we are having now.The temperature of the environment has changed and all of these are due to our activities” .

She said, “there is a whole lot we can do to change all these. Materials like plastic waste are non degradeable and they stay in the environment for 100 of years and we need to reduce the use of these kind of materials, refuse to use them were we can, recycle .

“As I told the students, one or two things you can do is that when you go to the market, instead of picking a plastic bag for every item you buy, just get yourself a market basket and you can reuse them over and over again and you are helping to preserve them environment and check negative effects of climate change.

“Let’s stop deforestation, cutting down trees without planting more trees is not good. We should take it as a point of duty to plant one tree a year . If all plant one tree a year, we would have done the environment so much good. We have to take action and decide not sitting on the sidelines , let us come together and serve the environment” and reduce climate change .

Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Michael Osogi said the state government is committed to a transitioning towards a green economy and sustainable environment.

The Commissioner who was represented by Mr. Sonigitu Asibong Ekpe, Director, Scientific in Charge of the Department of Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation said, the state government would soon launch an Environmental Policy on June 5, 2025, emphasizing the need to bridge the knowledge gap in environmental conservation.

He further revealed that the state has secured federal government backing for a 35 million Euro feasibility study on an eco-plan along the Lafarge evacuation corridor, to be funded on equity.

The Executive Director of Plogging Nigeria, Mr. Muyiwa Iyamolere, in his presentation, stressed the need for one to become an Eco Champion by not dumping waste like plastics chanting the slogan, “keep it till you can bin it” as a catch word for the students and others.

He said human activities, including, “indiscriminate plastic waste disposal, pollution, and deforestation, are accelerating climate change and leading to dire consequences such as rising sea levels, extreme temperatures, economic downturns, and droughts”.

According to him, the impact of deforestation, cautioning that unregulated tree cutting contributes to soil erosion, habitat destruction, and reduced oxygen production.

“We must adopt systematic tree-planting strategies before felling trees”, Iyamolere said adding that as part of the environmental call to action, people must “embrace the five Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover” to ensure that the environment is protected.

He emphasized the need to protect the very environment that sustains all lives, suggesting that for every tree cut down, multiple trees should be planted to replenish lost greenery.

He said, “cutting down trees is not bad but we must cut rhem systematically…Plastics are dangerous to environment. Oldest plastic of over 200 years has not decared so must refuse the use of plastics”.
