Akiba Seeks Collective Efforts to End Drug Abuse, Illicit Trafficking in Nigeria

The Member representing Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency,  Rep. Bassey Akiba, has sued for an urgent for the Governments at all levels and the entire society to intensify efforts to combat the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

In a statement dated June 26, to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 2025, Akiba said, everyone should “say no to drugs and say yes to life”.

He pointed out that, “the effects of drug abuse and illicit trafficking are far-reaching, with negative impacts on individuals, families, and society as a whole”.

Akiba who is the Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services said the menace of drug abuse is damaging to health and the society hence, “we are reminded of the urgent need to intensify our collective efforts to combat this scourge”.

With this year’s theme, “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All,” the Lawmaker called on “governments, communities, families, and individuals to unite in providing access to prevention, effective treatment, and long-term recovery support.

“Let us use this day to recommit to awareness campaigns, support recovery programmes, and strengthen institutions working tirelessly to keep our communities safe and drug-free”.
